The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. The owners who sleep best through it are the ones who decided everything in May. Fill this in with the person caring for your home, and keep a copy where you can find it from anywhere.
Decide before June 1
- Who readies the house, and how to reach you and a backup contact
- What comes inside: furniture, planters, grills, decorations
- Which shutters or impact openings are closed, and which are installed by a licensed provider
- Refrigerator, freezer, water and air-conditioning settings during a storm
- Where vehicles, boats and golf carts should be
- Your insurance agent’s number and your policy number, and your community association contact
Before the season
- Have shutters and any generator serviced by licensed providers
- Photograph each room and the exterior, so you have a record of the house before any storm
- Keep important documents and valuables somewhere you can reach them from away
When a storm is forecast
- Confirm the plan with the person caring for your home
- Outdoor items in and shutters closed, as agreed
- Photographs of the house before the weather arrives
After it passes
- A visit as soon as it is safe and the roads are open
- Photographs of every room and the exterior, shared with you
- Licensed firms for any repairs, drying or tree work
- Your agent told promptly, with the photographs, if there is damage
